Baking Outside of the Box: Celebrating June Holidays

June is here, and that means the days are warm and long. When you’re not enjoying the great outdoors, you’ve got even more hours of daylight in which to bake. If that’s not a good enough reason, then consider these three June holidays that are sure to inspire you.

June 3: National Egg Day. Baking wouldn't be baking without eggs! They play a vital role in baking, giving us flavor, texture, color and richness. White eggs and brown eggs are the same nutritionally; they just come from different breeds of chickens. But medium, large and jumbo are not the same, as you surely know. Be sure to use large eggs when called for (the large egg is the standard in most recipes).

June 14: Flag Day. Many of us like to show off our patriotism on July 4th with red, white and blue treats. But Flag Day, the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777, provides another opportunity to commemorate the Grand Old Flag with America-themed baked goods. Patriotic cupcakes are a cinch. Decorate with red, white and blue frosting, sprinkles or even strawberries and blueberries.

June 21: Father’s Day. Okay, in terms of holidays, Father’s Day is not outside of the box, but compared to Mother’s Day, fathers definitely get the shaft. Give thanks to Dad with baked goods. The kids will have a blast helping in the kitchen, and Dad will be touched with a home baked gift that he knows comes from the heart. And with our bakeware, cleanup is practically nonexistent.
